One year of boards, training, and progression
Sandbox opened with a simple idea: a gym built around boards, training, and progression. One year later, we're celebrating the same way – with a comp built around the boards you train on, the people you climb with, and the community that made Sandbox what it is.
How it works
Form a team of three
Climb together, score together
Qualify on the boards
From June 8–28, climb during your regular visits and log your best sends across Kilter Board, Tension Board 2, and Grasshopper Board.
Read the rules of Qualifiers round
Divisions are sorted during qualifiers
Beginner through advanced. You don't need to choose a division up front – we'll sort divisions as the qualifying round plays out, so every level has a bracket.
Finals on the spray wall
Top teams in each division go head-to-head on Saturday July 4.
Why join?
Board climbing is usually individual – your projects, your sessions, your sends.
This comp turns it into something shared.
Build a team, chase points together, compare strategies, and give yourself a reason to train with intent through June.
Who this is for
You don't need to be the strongest climber in the gym.
This comp is for:
• crews who want a reason to train through June
• friends who want to climb and score as a team
• board climbers who want a different kind of challenge
• newer climbers who want a comp that still feels approachable
• stronger climbers who want a creative finals format
A note on team balance:
To keep the team format balanced and interesting, female climbers will receive a scoring bonus on eligible climbs. Mixed teams will be rewarded in the scoring, so team composition will matter.
Schedule
June 8-28. Board qualifiers
No special days, no scheduled times. Climb on the Kilter Board, Tension Board 2, and Grasshopper Board during your regular visits, log what you send, and help your team build the strongest score across the boards.
How scoring works
• Every climb is worth its grade in points – a V5 earns 5, a V7 earns 7.
• Each climber can submit up to 3 climbs, for a team total of 9.
• Female climbers get a +1 grade bonus on each climb, capped at +3 points.
• Only sends done at Sandbox during the qualifying round count.
Eligible climbs are drawn from a curated pool on each board. Selection criteria and submission instructions will go out when the qualifiers open.
June 29-July 3. Break week
You rest, we confirm and communicate the final logistics.
Saturday, July 4. Spray wall finals
Finals move from the boards to the spray wall, and the format flips: instead of climbing set problems, teams set problems for each other.
It's not just about who pulls the hardest. It's about climbing well, setting smart, and understanding the game.
How it works
• Each team picks a spray wall and sets a problem – something they can climb, but their opponents might not.
• A randomly chosen member of the setting team demonstrates the climb. If they can't send their own set, the point is forfeited.
• Opposing teams then attempt the climb. If they send, they take the point. If they don't, the setting team scores.
10 minutes to set, 5 minutes to climb. Part climbing, part strategy, part knowing what your team does best.
