There's a physio in the gym on Thursdays

Move Clinic at Sandbox
Six Thursdays, 6 August – 10 September

Move Clinic are running a physiotherapy pop-up at Sandbox for six weeks, Thursdays 3–7pm in the lounge. You'll see Jamie Chen – ten years a physiotherapist, the last three working with climbers, climbing herself since 2019.

Six dates, one afternoon each. Booking and payment go through Move Clinic. You don't need to be a member and you don't need to pay entry.

Sore fingers, shoulders, elbows

The things that turn up in a board gym: sore fingers, shoulders that complain after a session, elbows that have been grumbling for a month. Climbers working around something that hasn't settled on its own and looking for a plan for the next few weeks rather than another opinion from the mat.

If you've been quietly climbing less because something hurts, this is the appointment to book today.

Who you'll be seeing

Jamie Chen graduated from the University of Sydney and has practised as a physiotherapist for ten years, starting in general musculoskeletal and sports injuries. She joined Move Clinic three years ago to work with climbers.

She started climbing in late 2019. She boulders in gyms around Sydney, lead climbs in the Blue Mountains, and regularly trains at Sandbox.

What your first session looks like

In an initial consultation, Jamie assesses what's driving the problem and sets out what changes in your climbing while you work through it. That usually covers:

  • The written plan. The exercises, the starting load and what changes from week to week.
  • What you can still do. Where it's appropriate, the plan is built around continuing to climb in some form rather than stopping altogether. Whether that's the right call depends on what she finds.
  • Load and movement. What to change about volume, intensity and the kind of climbing you're doing.
  • What to change afterwards. Warm-up, technique, training structure.

Booking and payment are with Move Clinic

Sandbox provides the room. Nothing goes through the gym, and we don't see your appointment or anything discussed in it.

You don't need to be a Sandbox member, and there's no gym entry to pay if you're only here for the appointment.

When and where

Move Clinic's calendar shows the remaining times.

Thursdays, 3–7pm.

Dates: 6, 13, 20 and 27 August; 3 and 10 September
Where: ground floor of Sandbox Bouldering – Unit A2, 27-29 Fariola Street, Silverwater
Booking: through Move Clinic
Gym entry: not needed for an appointment

Six Thursdays only

This is a trial. Move Clinic and Sandbox agreed to six weeks to find out whether a physio in the gym is something climbers here actually use. In mid-September we'll both look at the results and decide whether it continues.

If you want it to stay, say so. If something's been bothering you, that's a reason to book. If nothing is, don't book an appointment you don't need – email us instead and tell us what you think: ask@sandboxbouldering.com.au

And if your physio has cleared you for strength work, see how the strength and conditioning program fits around your climbing.
